Management
Brief: Manufacturing Outsourcing
Both strategic
and pricing decisions lie at the heart of outsourcing choices. In order
to rapidly expand operations and capture markets at an opportune time,
capital, technical, and employee resources are required. Outsourcing
is often an attractive option, since it offers the availability of needed
resources without the need for new capital. Risks can also be shared
with the outsourcer, and financial flexibility gained via reduced debt
levels. However, certain intangible costs, associated with political
and economic risks and supply chain management restrictions, should
be seriously considered when entering into outsourcing partnerships........read

BPIR
Network - what's been happening?
Well
our new network is slowly gaining momentum. There are upwards of 350
member profiles now created and these people, from more than 20 different
countries, are now talking to each other, making new contacts, finding
synergies, and benefiting from being able to plug in, whenever they
like, to a group of business improvement focussed individuals. Have
you created your own member profile yet? Tried out the contact mechanisms?
If you have any issue in the business performance area
on which you could do with some help, some objective opinion, or just
need someone to bounce ideas off, then just plug in to the network and
reach out.
Example:
Last week I received a contact from a manager in Singapore who was having
a real struggle managing several remote teams. Over a series of emails
which then quickly developed into a Skype conference call with a few
others in our networks we not only provided effective assistance but
we all learned something valuable from the experience and also made
some excellent contacts / potential colleagues / clients / customers.

BPIR Newsletter - No. 5 2010
Hi ,
Welcome to our fifth newsletter of 2010.
Management Brief: Customer Compliant Resolution Customers can be won for life by taking the trouble to fix their problems in a competent and caring way. By really listening to concerns, and by immediately responding with a
solution, customers can be both impressed and delighted. A complaining customer usually believes that something can —and ought to—be done to remedy his or her problem; this offers a special opportunity for organisations to ensure
that they retain valuable customers. Extraordinary
customer experiences are mostly achieved by doing many small things effectively to build up an outstanding record of customer service.

Best Practice Case Studies
Read one of our best practice case studies:
Leadership Development aims at breakthrough projects
Cisco had created a best in class leadership Development programme and its Center for Collaborative leadership was a powerful example of this. Ciscos ran an Action Learning Forum where around 60 senior leaders participated in a
50 percent executive development and 50 percent action learning forum. Over this 16-week course, teams would compete for internal project funding. Only one team would receive funding. Since launching in 2006 these projects have
earned over US$1B in value for Cisco. The current goal looked to deliver US$25B in added value over the next five years. At Cisco LD was positioned as a competitive enabler; they developed their leadership brand as `a great place
to be for leaders`; there was a clear business outcome/value-add expectation; they invested in time and money; and aimed at breakthrough projects which would create new and sometimes altered markets

Customer segmentation (market segmentation) works for agrochemical company
When its patents for `Roundup` expired Monsanto, a US agrochemical company, used a needs-based market segmentation approach. Three market segments were identified as (1) a price-driven segment of customers (who were offered a
generically labeled product); (2) a mainstream segment (who were offered a `Roundup` branded product); and (3) a technically sophisticated segment (who were offered a product called `Roundup Weather Max`, which was marketed as
being very effective even under difficult weather conditions). As a result Monsanto maintained its 60% share of the global herbicide market even though the patents had expired and cheaper substitutes were readily available

Health and Safety Programme - drug free
The cost of a single accident by an employee impaired by alcohol or drugs has the potential to devastate a small business. United Fire Equipment Company (UFE)’s drug-free workplace policy was a key component of its overall efforts to ensure the highest standards of workplace safety and customer service. Pre-employment screening and post-accident drug and alcohol testing were essential parts of the UFE programme. Pre-employment screening helped to attract higher calibre employees, while post-accident testing demonstrated to current employees that substance abuse would not be tolerated, and this acted as a deterrent. During employee orientation staff were informed of the drug-free workplace policy and the required procedures for reporting accidents and injuries. Bulletin boards and the organisation’s intranet were used to keep employees updated concerning the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse.......read more

Customer Complaints Resolution Process satisfies all involved
Faced with complaints about how long it took to address graffiti complaints, the City of Minneapolis reviewed its processes to become more efficient. Previously graffiti complaints were registered at the police department and a local precinct officer was to photograph the graffiti . Because graffiti itself was not a high priority a complaint could sit for weeks before the site was photographed. The police would then send the complaint to the department of public works for cleanup. Because of the dissatisfaction the city decided to send graffiti complaints directly to the department of public works and provided employees with digital cameras so employees could take the pictures of the graffiti which were forwarded to the appropriate police precinct. The department of public works then quickly cleaned the site. The new process drastically reduced the amount of time it took to respond to graffiti complaints......read more
Leadership Development and Employee Training an important aspect of Award Winning effort
To support its lean manufacturing efforts Autoliv, a US airbag module manufacturer, based its creation of a lean culture on the idea that managers must dedicate time to teach employees. Every leader was viewed as a coach and teacher and was expected to train and lead employees to improve skills and abilities and understand the philosophies of their lean methods (called the Autoliv Production System or APS). An annual succession-planning process identified people with leadership ability who have achieved significant results. Intense training was held by the company and leadership trainees were taught the tools to run and manage a production line. Comprehensive training on the APS was developed and taught by managers, supervisors, and subject-matter experts and given to all employees. ...... read more |

Process Outsourcing
Business
Process Outsourcing (BPO) involves sub-contracting business functions
and processes to an external service provider. BPO offers potential
cost savings to organisations, as well as introducing fresh expertise,
best-in-class practices, and state-of-the-art technologies, all of which
lead to competitive advantages. New entrant operations can be placed

Watch
pre-recorded webinar on “Business Excellence and Benchmarking - A Global
Perspective”
This webinar was delivered by Dr Robin Mann on 8 April in Toronto, Canada.
As the Chairman of the Global Benchmarking Network and Chief Expert
for business excellence for the Asian Productivity Organisation’s recent
research project on the status of business excellence, Robin was in
a unique position to provide a global perspective on business excellence
and benchmarking.
Robin’s
presentation drew from three projects:
- A
research project on behalf of the Asian Productivity Organisation
in 2009 to identify the value and impact of business excellence. Five
countries participated in the research; India, Japan, Singapore, Taiwan,
and Thailand.
- A
research project on behalf of the Global Benchmarking Network in 2008
to investigate awareness, use and benefits of benchmarking. Over 40
countries were represented.
- A
research project on behalf of SAI Global in 2006 to review and update
the Australian business excellence framework. This
project has the involvement of 16 countries.

Code

Cisco
wrote its code of conduct in a conversational tone similar to one employee
speaking with another. The format was enhanced using quick-read call-out-boxes
to help employees to identify with the code. “Learn-More” links provided
more detailed policy and `What If` scenarios addressed Cisco-specific
issues. Cisco’s ethics programme was aimed at its global and highly
technical workforce. An ethics Idol` series of four, fun modules, introduced
an animated `contestant` who told the story of his or her ethical dilemma
via action-packed visuals and witty song parodies......read

BPIR
- what's been happening?
New member’s area to be launched – Try it out! – After
a lot of hard work we are pleased to announce the launch of the new
member’s area of the BPIR.com. By the time you read this or soon after
you will notice its new fresh look. It will have clear buttons showing
where you can go and what you can do. This new design will help users
to understand the difference between the various searches and types
of information we have – we realized that in the past the amount of
information we have can be quite overwhelming! This much simpler approach
will enable you to quickly decide whether or not you want to search
our Information databases or Network with our other members. We hope
you will like it – let us have your feedback!
Networking
taking off – With the new design we are expecting our networking
area to become much more popular. Already we have over 400 member profiles
created and these people, from more than 20 different countries, are
now talking to each other, making new contacts, finding synergies, and
benefiting from being able to plug in, whenever they like, to a group
of business improvement focussed individuals. Have you created your
own member profile yet? Tried out the contact mechanisms? If you have
any issue in the business performance area on which you could do with
some help, some objective opinion, or just need someone to bounce ideas
off, then just plug in to the network and reach out.
Example:
Recently I received a contact from a manager in Singapore who was having
a real struggle managing several remote teams. Over a series of emails
which then quickly developed into a Skype conference call with a few
others in our networks we not only provided effective assistance but
we all learned something valuable from the experience and also made
some excellent contacts / potential colleagues / clients / customers..

A
six year study concluded in 2009 by Harvard Business School, Insead and Brigham Young University involved over 3000

In 2005
General Electric, a US based technology and services conglomerate, recognised
sustainability was a business opportunity and set up an Ecomagination

where energy savings could be found and managers began to be measured
on how much energy savings they had achieved. The Ecomagination unit targeted
executives to build its business across divisions and sold the solutions
within the company, including projects installing LED lights on a factory
