Training or instruction given to individuals in the work setting to assist in developing the skills and knowledge necessary to carry out work.  OJT practices are normally carried out during working hours, involves both formal and informal training initiatives, and is usually conducted by staff who are more experienced in a particular process, skill, or knowledge area. OJT is a very effective method for transferring knowledge and skills within an organisation and can ensure consistency in how work is done.

The Stage

In any organisation the process of recruiting or redeploying new or inexperienced staff creates extra costs in both financial and non-financial terms associated with the whole process. Most of these costs can be estimated before hand and therefore anticipated, however, the last cost in the process is that related to training and the cost of lower performance during training. It is important therefore, to use training techniques that bring new staff members online and up to speed as effectively as possible. OJT is a technique that is often used at this particular process stage. However, before implementation it must be determined if OJT is the best method for the current task, who should conduct the training, how the training will occur, and then how to measure its success.
