Strategic Partnering
To reduce transportation costs, delivery distances and CO2 emissions, Ocean Spray, a US growers cooperative, partnered with a competitor, Tropicana, to supply its markets in the Northeast US, Tropicana shipped orange juice by train from Florida to New Jersey and Tropicana was paying to send them back empty. One of Tropicana’s logistics suppliers realised that it and Ocean Spray, a cranberry juice maker based in Massachusetts who had a distribution centre in Florida to meet growing demands for its products in the southern US, could partner to fill the empty trains. The logistics supplier offered to set up a road-and-rail line for Ocean Spray that included a competitive price for Tropicana’s empty boxcars. After initial concerns about partnering closely with a chief competitor, the collaboration went ahead, and Ocean Spray cut its transportation costs by more than 40% and its greenhouse gas emissions by 65%. …… more case studies.
