Sustainable Development (Sustainability) innovations Domtar Corporation, the largest integrated marketer and manufacturer of uncoated freesheet paper in North America, focussed its early sustainability efforts on the transparency of its fiber supply chain, and then expanded its view of sustainability to focus on manufacturing excellence and optimising efficiency. Targets were set for reductions in greenhouse gas, water and waste. Domtar recaptured steam generated in its operations through co-generation, and produced electrons and used then to either power mills or sold them to the grid In 2013, 76.3% of energy used came from renewable resources and another 3% to 4% on top of that was generated and sold to the grid. Domtar also allowed other companies to set up operations to tap into Domtar’s CO2 emissions and use the CO2 to create carbonic acid, and use it to create precipitated calcium carbonate, or PCC. The companies then sold the PCC back to Domtar who used it’s as a raw material in its pulping process. ……..read more case studies. | ![]() |
