An anonymous Californian dairy had a calf mortality rate of 5-10%, this was worse than the industry average (less than 5%). A benchmarking partner with 1% calf mortality was selected. A cause and effect diagram representing the high mortality of calves was developed, each factor in the diagram was observed in the benchmarking partner for comparison.
