The Baldrige Excellence Framework has a set of 11 foundational beliefs and behaviors (core values) that underpin its systems approach to achieving organizational high performance. One of those core values is agility and resilience. While both agility and resilience are important, many of us conflate these two concepts. I believe understanding their differences and complementarity will help organizations consider all aspects of preparing for uncertain futures.

Every few years, in my dreams, I relive an incident from my first real job. At age 14, I was eligible for a work permit in 1960’s New York City. I obtained my permit and got a Saturday job working at the largest (five floors) hobby store in the city. It was located in one of the posh downtown shopping areas and had, among other things, a functioning model railroad display that had every possible bell and whistle (literally) and occupied a significant part of the model railroading floor of the building.

When the City of Germantown (TN) was named a Baldrige Award recipient in 2019, the small suburb of Memphis (just 20 square miles in size) became only the fourth city to earn the prestigious, Presidential award for organizational excellence.

I was delighted to participate in the 4th European Conference on Industrial Engineering & Operations Management (IEOM) last month. The theme of this cycle was “Road to Resilient Manufacturing and Logistics”. Over the 4 days of the conference, there were more than 90 presentations, 11 competitions, and 6 discussion panels. It was truly an outstanding event!
