Application/Key learning points: There are roughly 350,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) victims each year in the United States. In some parts of the country, the chance of survival is a shocking eight per cent. This bleak result isn’t inevitable, however, and some EMS systems have consistently shown they can achieve significantly higher survival rates. This article deals with OHCA survival, monitoring the quality of CPR, recommendations from the American Heart Association about CPR performance, and continuous quality improvement.
