A comparative survey on 5-S and TQM practices was conducted in January 1995 to 200 leading companies in the UK and Japan respectively. The sample companies were selected from the Times 1000 -1995 and Extel Financial Asia Pacific Handbook. Some 8% of replies were obtained. 18 leading companies of approximately the same number of employees were selected for analysis from the questionnaires returned in each country.
